Fredagen den 24 mars har alla förutsättningar att bli en episk och historisk kväll på lilla KONTORET i Uddevalla. På scen står då ett av Englands just nu mest hypade band Normanton Street från Brighton. Deras sound beskrivs som en mix av soul, jazz, hip hop och blues. Eller som de själva beskrev det när tidningen Independent år 2016 utnämnde gruppen till: New music to listen to this week: Normanton Street.

Normanton Street’s sound is lyrically focused with three distinct vocals, jazz influenced guitars, warm bass grooves and tight rhythmic drums.

Based in Brighton, the four members consist of Ned, Nicholson, Phoebe, and Nico. Ned and Nicholson (both on bass, guitar, and vocals) have been close friends since childhood, and lived on the same street in Bradford where they grew up. Together they grew up making music in various formats and line ups, and would jam at local bars after moving to Brighton, until they stumbled across Phoebe (vocals) one night after a show at The Mesmerist bar. The trio put together a Lauryn Hill cover, but soon realised that their unique chemistry could not be limited to one song. Normanton Street took shape, with Nico completing the puzzle on drums after blowing away the group as a dep.

Since then, Normanton Street have quickly amassed a loyal following of fans around the world off musical prowess and a lot of hard work. In the last 18 months, they’ve played gigs and festivals across the UK, Europe and US, including France, Spain, Croatia, Belgium, Holland and Austin (Texas). As well as opening for high-profile artists like the legendary Talib Kweli and Mercury-nominated poet Kate Tempest. Meanwhile, Normanton Street’s success has made them favourites in their home town of Brighton, with support from local radio stations Juice FM, Radio Reverb, and local independent label Tru Thoughts, who have featured their music on shows and podcasts. In summer 2016, they were selected as The Independent’s ‘New Music of the Week’. This momentum attracted attention from various booking agents and venues over in New York, which is where the band will be playing four shows during the first week of December.

Never ones to wait around for the industry, Normanton Street have achieved all this success in such a short space of time by releasing music on a label started by Ned and Nicholson, QM Records. QM Records has released two Normanton Street EPs, including 2014’s Much Respect, as well as music from the talented poet Tommy Sissons and a compilation album featuring music from 14 different artists based in Brighton. Through QM Records, Ned and Nicholson regularly host nights as well as DJ in Brighton and London showcasing a number of upcoming talents.

This year, things have taken on an even faster pace. The band released a new single titled ‘Take Time’ as a free download to start off the year, which came off the back of a six-part documentary shot by London-based Boom Productions. Drawing attention from across the pond, they were then selected to perform at SXSW Festival in Austin, Texas, where they received an amazing reception. While in Texas, they also shot a video for their latest single, ‘Angelene’, which was premiered by The Independent on the 8th of June alongside an extended feature on the band, who were selected as the outlet’s New Music of The Week. Both Angelene and Take Time feature on the band’s latest release, a nine-track deluxe edition of the ‘Life’s Real’ EP, available across most streaming platforms.

In the early months of 2017 the band will be branching out into Scandanavia where they will be going on a 4 date tour in Sweden. Next year promises to be a year of expansion for the band.

SOPHIA TAKO
Efter många år av letande efter rätt sound har Sophia Tako äntligen hittat hem bland artister som FKA Twigs, Solange och Grimes, starka kvinnor som vågar berätta sina historier på egna unika sätt. Sophias musik är en äkta reflektion av hennes inre känslovärld och hennes texter är frågor, observationer och tankar som hon hittills mött i livet som hon vill dela med världen.

Sophias resa startade redan när hon som femåring bestämde sig för att bli artist och sedan dess har hon jobbat hårt med siktet tydligt inställt på att att framföra egen musik som får människor att känna och uppleva alla olika sidor av livet. Hennes resa har tagit henne genom bland annat både Idol och X-Factor men hon visste direkt att den typen av marknadsföring inte var för henne. För Sophia handlar musik om genuinitet och att våga vara precis den man vill vara, och detta är det hon vill förmedla till världen; att alla kan välja att vara exakt den man vill vara och så länge det är ens bästa Jag kan ingen säga något.

Hon har tidigare varit en del i ett funkigt pop/rock band som tog sig till finalen i tävlingen Musik Direkt och fick mycket uppmärksamhet från media, men som i vanlig ordning men en blessing in disguise växte bandet isär och Sophia tvingades slutligen försöka hitta det sound som hon verkligen ville förknippas med och det ledde till att hon hittade artister som

FKA Twigs, Grimes, Princess Nokia, Tkay Maidza. Hon hittade hem bland de kvinnliga undergroundartister som just nu är en stor växande del av indiependentindustrin. På hennes nya Ep RIDE har Sophia dykt djupt inom sig själv och rannsakat alla aspekter av sitt liv; kärlek, sexualitet och att växa upp och inse att man inte längre är ett barn utan en kvinna och att våga äga styrkan i vad det innebär. I låten ’Good Girl’ sjunger hon om hur trött hon är på att vara duktig för andras godkännande och tillkännager att hon fått nog: ”God knows i’ve tried to be a good girl all life, and God knows i’m tired, I am tired of hiding my true desires. I am just a girl.”

Sophia är redo att göra sin röst hörd, dags att utmana gränser, skapa konversationer och få folk att ifrågasätta hur ett samhälle egentligen ska se ut!
